Jimmy Buffett, the singer-songwriter who penned the laid-back anthem "Margaritaville," has died at the age of 76.

The "King of the Parrotheads" passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, after a long battle with health issues.

Buffett was born in Pascagoula, Mississippi, in 1946, and grew up in Mobile, Alabama.

He moved to Key West, Florida, in the early 1970s, and began writing songs about his love of the Caribbean.

His biggest hit, "Margaritaville," was released in 1977 and became a worldwide anthem for beach bums and vacationers.

He has also written several books, including the novels "Tales from Margaritaville" and "A Pirate Looks at Fifty."

He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013.He is survived by his wife, Jane, and their four children.
